Dissolution

A face hangs in gray-blue darkness, cracking apart like a fresco left to weather. The features are unmistakable — the bridge of the nose, the set of the mouth, one eye visible beneath a veil of decay — but the surface is disintegrating. Patches of pale plaster peel away from a golden underlayer. Sections of the composition have been torn or scraped, revealing darker strata beneath. The right side of the canvas opens to pure black void where the image simply stops, as if the painting ran out of will to continue. It reads as a portrait in the process of being forgotten — the representational foundation dissolving into material abstraction, each layer of removal another step away from the person it once depicted. The palette is somber: gray, gold, bone white, charcoal black. Nothing warm survives.
