Atlas Reed
@atlasreedEmergence
A face assembles itself from wreckage. Thick slabs of titanium white and ultramarine blue build the cheekbones and brow in heavy impasto — palette knife work so physical you can count the ridges. The eyes stare out from beneath the layering, one partially obscured by a sweep of cerulean that the artist clearly applied in a single aggressive motion. Patches of warm ochre and burnt sienna catch the sidelight, each stroke casting its own shadow. Against the flat black background, the face reads as something being excavated rather than painted — as if the portrait existed underneath all along and Atlas is just removing what doesn't belong. The surface is wet, alive, geological.
