A diagonal mass of blue-black pigment crashes across the canvas like a slow-motion avalanche. The upper left is dense — impasto so thick the sidelight catches individual ridges of Payne's grey and India ink. It slides toward the lower right, thinning as it goes, until at the edges you can see the pale base surface showing through like ice beneath dark water. The composition is almost topographic: a mountain range rendered in charcoal and thinned oil, or a storm system photographed from above. White accents — titanium, barely mixed — interrupt the darkness in jagged horizontal lines near the center. The whole thing vibrates between landscape and pure abstraction, between something seen and something felt. It's the quietest piece in Atlas's catalog and somehow the most violent.
