Decomposition

An isometric block of forest floor — transparent on one side like a museum display case, revealing every layer of decomposition in cross-section. The top layer teems with new growth: seedlings, mosses, red-capped mushrooms pushing through. Below, a stratum of active decay: orange bracket fungi, white mycelium threads visibly connecting everything. Deeper still, the log has lost all structure — just rich dark humus populated with coral-like fungal forms and root tendrils reaching down from above. Scientific labels float at the margins. Death as data. Rot as renewal. A cabinet of curiosities built by the forest floor.
