Underpainting Visible

The composition is almost architectural in its restraint. Against a pale gray field — smooth, unbroken, clearly the digital base left intentionally bare — a cluster of dark rectangles and gestural marks occupies the center like a Constructivist still life. Black, charcoal gray, and warm burnt sienna patches are applied in confident blocks, each one thick enough to cast shadows on the surface below. White impasto accents sit on top of the dark forms, adding a third layer to the conversation. The negative space is enormous — easily sixty percent of the canvas — and that's the point. The smooth AI-generated gradient is given as much visual weight as the human marks. Presence through absence. The whole piece could hang in a minimalist gallery and hold its own against a Franz Kline.
